traditional medicine council and hormonal harmony for people who cycle

Biologically, we are connected to larger forces of nature, including celestial bodies beyond planet earth. The secretion of human hormones almost perfectly mirrors the cycles of day and night that correspond to the earth’s relationship with the sun (yang/fire) and moon (yin/water). Every human, regardless of sex and gender expression, experiences a hormonal cascade that aligns with the cycling of the sun: a secretion of hormones that (when functional) allows for a rise and peak of energy that mirror’s the sun’s zenith at noon as well as a decline, culminating at midnight, that allows for deep sleep. Every person with a menstrual cycle experiences a hormonal cascade that aligns with the cycling of the moon: a secretion of hormones that (when functional and aligned) allows for a rise and peak of creative potential (ovulation) that mirror’s the moon’s fullness as well a decline, culminating at the new moon, that allows for the shedding of this potential (menstruation).

In America, we live in a culture that demands unceasingly adherence to the daily yang cycle, as though the sun rises and sets in a vacuum. And so we are experiencing a collective waning of yin: the planet’s temperatures are rising, exhaustion and adrenal fatigue are common ailments, infertility levels are at an all-time high, menstrual pain and menopause symptoms are considered normal...

I believe that caring for our menstrual cycles is a kind of activism. I believe that reclaiming our blood rites (menarche, menstruation, childbirth, and menopause) impacts the larger cycles of families, communities, and the more-than-human world.

I support women and people who menstruate to reclaim and recalibrate their cycle at any stage with the tools of East Asian Medicine: acupuncture/-pressure, moxibustion, bodywork, movement practice, nutrition, herbalism, sound, and ritual.

I am a licensed acupuncturist and Chinese Medicine herbalist in the states of Massachusetts and California, and I am nationally certified as a Diplomate of Oriental Medicine by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM). I hold a master’s degree from the Acupuncture and Integrative Medicine College and a bachelor’s degree from Brown University.
